Is Gwyneth's "Country Strong" this year's "Crazy Heart"?

The title track from "Country Strong," out December 22 in limited release to qualify for Oscar contention before opening nationwide January 7, 2011, is excellent. This trailer is fairly promising, I must admit. Gwyneth Paltrow has been on a roll lately, following her incredible supporting performance opposite Joaquin Phoenix in "Two Lovers" (my favorite film of 2009), so I'll be seeing "Country Strong" when it opens over the holidays.

Gwyneth plays freshly rehabbed Nashville songstress Kelly Colter, whose manager (Tim McGraw) is trying to relaunch her career in the wake of a trashed reputation. He's got his eye on a Christian teen starlet (played by Gossip Girl meanie Leighton Meester) to open for Kelly on her upcoming tour, while the star herself would rather see hunky young guy Garrett Hedlund (the star of December's "TRON Legacy") warm up the audience before she takes the stage. The story seems to be little more than a standard variation on the age-old redemption saga, but with Gwyneth's singing/acting chops and an appealing cast, "Country Strong" might outperform its generic boilerplate. Here's the trailer...
