Thousands of mourners have gathered at the Staples Center for a public memorial in honour of Kobe and Gianna Bryant.

The service - being dubbed 'The Celebration of Life' - is taking place where the basketball superstar played for the Los Angeles Lakers for the entirety of his 20-season long professional career. 

Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna died along with seven others on 16 January in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California.

As the moving memorial service ended, Nat King Cole's 'Unforgettable' filled the arena. The crowd - who had rapturously applauded throughout - broke into chants of 'Kobe Kobe' before making their way out of the Staples Center.

Kobe Bryant's Oscar-winning short film is played to end the memorial
After Kobe Bryant retired from basketball, he took on a new challenge by writing a poem entitled Dear Basketball. The poem was a love letter to the end of his career. 

This poem was then turned into an animated short film, and it went on to win Mr Bryant an Oscar in 2018. 


The Celebration of Life memorial ended with Dear Basketball getting broadcasted through the Staples Center.

Shaquille O'neal jokes about working with Kobe

He joked about one moment where he approached Mr Bryant about his skills as a teammate.

The two women were seen in camera footage wiping their eyes while Michael Jordan spoke about his love for Kobe Bryant.


"When Kobe Bryant died, a piece of me died," he said. "Those are the memories that we have to live with and learn from. I promise you from this day forward I live with the memories of knowing I had a little brother...Rest in peace little brother."

Michael Jordan jokes about becoming a new crying meme

He referenced a past meme that circulated showing the NBA star crying during his Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2009.

"Kobe was my dear friend. He was like a little brother," he added. 


The NBA hall of fame star then mentioned how people often tried to compare the two basketball players. 


"Everyone always wanted to talk about the comparisons between he and I. I just wanted to talk about Kobe," Mr Jordan said.

The musician played the piano for 20,000 people in attendance at the Celebration of Life memorial. 

She picked the classical piece Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, which is a favourite classical piece for both Kobe Bryant and his daughter. 


Rob Pelinka said Mr Bryant learned to play that piece by ear years back for his wife, Vanessa Bryant, as a show of love.

Kobe's former agent reveals final text messages with the basketball player
"Kobe and I talked or texted every single day because that is what best friends do," Rob Pelinka said.

The basketball player was trying to help secure an internship with a baseball agency for the surviving daughter of John Altobelli, who died during the crash along with his wife and one of their daughters. 

"Kobe vouched for the girl's character, intellect, and work ethic. He clearly wanted to champion a bright future for her," Mr Pelinka detailed, saying he promised his friend he would help get that done. "A handful of minutes later, Kobe and Gianna and seven other beautiful souls ascended into heaven. Kobe had been texting me from the helicopter." 

He added: "Kobe's last human act was heroic."

"Kobe was the MVP of girl dads, or MVD," Mrs Bryant said. "He never left the toilet seat up. He always told the girls how beautiful and smart they are." 

She then expressed her gratitude that the basketball player was alive to hear their youngest daughter, eight-month-old Capri, say "dada" before he died. 

"He isn't going to be able to walk our girls down the aisle or spin me around on the dance floor,' she said, "but I want my girls to know the amazing man, husband and father he was."
