I was shopping in Superdrug, picking up a couple of items for Drugstore Month and it was 3 for 2 across all makeup brands. I had already picked out two foundations and I needed another item. I didn't particularly need anything and that was when I noticed the Maybelline Color Tattoos in amongst the Maybelline stand.
I used to use them all the time and there is an old blog post I wrote back in the day which featured one of the Color Tattoos: Battle of the Cream Eyeshadows. I loved them but I simply stopped using them as I began to venture out and try new things. However when I saw them in Superdrug I was reminded of how much I loved them and as I needed something to be my third item I decided to get one. When I saw the shade name Pink Gold, a blog post automatically came to me. In that moment, I thought it would be perfect to compare to my beloved Tom Ford Golden Peach Cream Eye Shadow and the recently relaunched Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise in Rose Gold and that is exactly what I am doing today.
Packaging
One of the main similarities between all three products is the packaging. I mean you can look at all three of these products and basically instantly tell they are a cream eyeshadow. The only one which is slightly different is the Tom Ford shadow but that is because it is a duo product, there is a glitter pigment in the lid which makes it more bulky. If you look at the standard cream eye shadows from Tom Ford they literally look the same as the Charlotte Tilbury one, just with slightly different branding. The Maybelline one is the most different but even that is a bit of a stretch. It is different because it is slightly flatter and there is not a clear top and bottom to this product. There is writing on both the lid and the base so it is hard to tell which way you keep it. To be honest I think this is a bit of a genius idea because if you are someone who has a beautifully displayed beauty collection (not me,) you can easily tell the product and the colour from both sides which isn't necessarily the case for the two other products.
The Charlotte Tilbury cream eyeshadow has frosted glass which is very chic and looks gorgeous but limits the amount of colour you can see in the pot. If you look at the top of the Tom Ford Cream Eyeshadow it is literally a white lid that says TF so it gives no indication to the colour. All you need is a couple of these in your collection and that's it, you have no idea which is which. Other than that they are mostly glass jars (except Tom Ford,) with a plastic lid of that brands colour. Even just looking at these three, the Charlotte Tilbury pot is my winner in terms of packaging. The burgundy lid with rose gold details is stunning and even though the frosted glass makes it hard to see the colour, I think it is a touch of luxury.
My least favourite is actually the packaging for the Tom Ford shadow, the entire product is housed in plastic packaging. Considering the price of the product, you would think they could do something a little bit more chic. Obviously there wasn't much they could do with the lid, as it is a duo, but the base could have been glass.

Formula
Even though my main thoughts when I was stood in Superdrug looking at the Maybelline cream shadow was, 'it is pink, gold and a cream eye shadow, I wonder if it is the same as either the Tom Ford or Charlotte Tilbury eye shadows?' They really are not that alike. For starts the Maybelline formula is a gel cream rather than being a straight cream like both the Tom Ford and Charlotte Tilbury products. As the Maybelline shadow is crossed with a gel, it is much thicker than the other two, more long lasting and slightly more greasy.
However as this is a gel, that is what gives the product its thicker texture and makes it slightly harder to pick up on your finger or nail, depending on if you have long fake nails like me or not. Both the Charlotte Tilbury and Tom Ford creams are much easier to spread and blend on your eye lid. The gel part of the Maybelline shadow is what makes it ultra long lasting and I would say it is the most long lasting out of the three. It is slightly annoying as the other two are over 4x the price of the Maybelline shadow.

Shade
All 3 shades are incredibly pigmented and give an amazing colour to the lid. The Charlotte Tilbury cream is definitely the lightest, as the formula of the Charlotte Tilbury creams do thin down more than the other two. As it is a little bit thinner, the colour sheers out a little bit more which means the shade doesn't remain as bold as perhaps you would want it to. Not only is the Charlotte Tilbury cream thinner than the other two shadows but it is also the lightest product anyway. Rose Gold is a soft baby pink with an element of warm gold running through the entire product. I adore this shade and it was exactly what I had been looking for, for a long time.
The Tom Ford shadow is much warmer and to me it screams summer time. I thought this was going to be slightly more pink than it is but I guess the name Golden Peach should have given it away. This is most definitely the warmest and least pink out of all of the shadows. I didn't know where Pink Gold from Maybelline would sit between the other two shades, I assumed it would be more pink than Golden Peach but perhaps more gold than Rose Gold. I was right in one respect but very wrong in the other.
I was right that the Maybelline shadow is more pink, it is easily the most pink out of the three. However it is easily the least gold out of the three. I was really disappointed that really this is not gold at all. I actually think it is quite cool toned which makes the name pink 'GOLD' totally pointless! In terms of shade, this doesn't make it a match for either shadow that I was hoping it was going to be a cheaper alternative for.
If you consider it as a stand alone product, it is a nice colour but it wasn't what I was expecting unfortunately. I'm not sure if wearing the Maybelline one, it would border on looking like an eye infection but it is super metallic which I think saves it, plus I always blend it out with a warm brown which tones down the bold pink shade. I think a matte pink shadow is an incredible risk but you should be ok with this one. I do like the shade of the Maybelline shadow but the shade makes it impossible to match to either the Tom Ford or the Charlotte Tilbury shadow.

Price Range
Clearly price was a massive factor into why I was looking for a cheaper alternative. The Tom Ford Cream Eye Shadow is a massive £48 but it is a duo product. They do sell individual pot eye shadows and they are £30 so they are the most expensive. Coming in a close second is the Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise in Rose Gold which is £22, still expensive but you don't cringe at the price like the Tom Ford price. Whereas the Maybelline shadow is only £5.99. I could probably buy the whole colour range of the Maybelline shadows for the price that I paid for one Tom Ford shadow! Considering the price and the surprising quality of the Maybelline shadows, I actually think they are a great option. Why should you spend a shit ton on a Tom Ford shadow when you can buy a Maybelline one which is just as good?
Summary
To sum up my thoughts, I am disappointed to say that the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Pink Gold is not a dupe for either the Charlotte Tilbury or the Tom Ford Cream Eye Shadow. The formulas are actually really different and the colours are incredibly different. If you are solely looking at this from the dupe stand point, then you will be disappointed but on it's own, this is an incredible product.
I have always liked the Maybelline cream shadows but I sort of lost my way with them when so many other amazing alternatives came out but testing this one has reminded me how much I love them. If you are looking for a cream eye shadow or you haven't tried these, you seriously need to give them a go.
