Gemstone Spotlight: Peridot

August is here and we're ushering it in with the rich green of the gemstone peridot!  Peridot's warm bright green hue makes it the perfect birthstone for August.  It is also the traditional gemstone for the 1st and 16th wedding anniversaries.

Instantly recognizable for its distinctive lime green color, peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine.  It is found in rocks created by volcanoes, meteorites and deep within the earth's mantle.  In 2006, peridot was found in comet dust brought back from the Stardust robotic space probe!

Peridot (pronounced pear-a-doe) is a French world derived from the Arabic word "faridat" which means gem.  The rich green color is caused by traces of iron and the intensity of the color depends on the amount of iron present. The color can vary from yellowish-green to olive to brownish green.

The lush, velvety green of peridot has long been associated with renewal and growth.  Peridot has been treasured for over 4,000 years.  The stones adorned the jewelry of the pharaohs in ancient Egypt.

Ancient Romans called peridot "Evening Emerald" because its brilliant color did not fade in lamplight, but glowed in the evening hours.

Many legends have been attributed to peridot.  The Hawaiian people believed peridot to be the tears of the Goddess Pele.  Some believed that peridot could ward off nightmares and others thought it could make dreams become reality.

Peridot is an excellent gemstone for any type of jewelry.  The beautiful pistachio to olive green of peridot makes a great addition to any jewelry wardrobe.
